How Much Caffeine Is in Mushroom Coffee?

The quick answer

Most mushroom coffees have less caffeine than regular coffee, usually 35 to 90mg per cup versus about 95mg in a standard brewed cup. It depends on the brand and whether it's a mushroom-coffee blend (still has real coffee) or a coffee alternative (little to none). Instant blends tend to land around 35 to 50mg; darker, coffee-forward ones can hit 80 to 90mg.

Here's the thing people get wrong: "mushroom coffee" isn't one product with one caffeine number. Some of it is real coffee with mushrooms added. Some of it is barely coffee at all. So the honest answer is "it depends," and below I'll show you exactly what it depends on.

The numbers, brand by brand

Coffee Caffeine per cup
Regular brewed coffee ~95mg
Everyday Dose 45mg (mild) / 90mg (medium)
RYZE 48mg (medium) / 80–90mg (dark)
MUD\WTR 35mg (original) / 45mg (coffee)
Four Sigmatic Not clearly labeled
OrganiiLand Protein Coffee ~40mg (deliberately low)
OrganiiLand Mushroom Coffee A normal brewed cup (it's real ground coffee)

Two of ours sit at opposite ends on purpose. Our Protein Coffee is kept low, around 40mg, so it's easy on the stomach and fine later in the day. Our Mushroom Coffee is actual organic ground coffee you brew, so it tracks a normal cup.

Why it's usually lower than regular coffee

Three reasons, mostly:

  • Less coffee per serving. Instant mushroom blends use a smaller amount of coffee or coffee extract, so there's simply less caffeine in the cup.
  • It's cut with other stuff. Mushrooms, cacao, chai, MCT or collagen take up part of the serving, which dilutes the caffeine versus a straight cup.
  • Some blends lean decaf or coffee-free. A few "coffee alternatives" have almost no caffeine at all and rely on mushrooms for the ritual, not the kick.

Mushroom-coffee blend vs coffee alternative

This is the distinction that explains everything:

  • A blend still contains real coffee, so it still has meaningful caffeine, just usually less than your normal brew.
  • An alternative may contain little or no coffee. Great if you're cutting back, frustrating if you expected a morning jolt.

Always check the label for a stated milligram number. If a brand won't tell you, that's its own kind of answer.

Lower caffeine plus L-theanine tends to feel like steady energy, not a spike.

Why mushroom coffee can feel calmer

A lot of these blends add L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea that tends to smooth out caffeine's edge. The caffeine still works; it just feels less jittery and spiky. So even at a similar caffeine number, a blend with L-theanine (ours included) can feel steadier than a straight espresso. For the full breakdown, see caffeine and L-theanine, explained.

Is lower caffeine good or bad?

Depends entirely on what you want it for.

  • Good if: you're caffeine-sensitive, you drink coffee in the afternoon, you get jittery easily, or you want something for the 2pm slump that won't wreck your sleep.
  • Less ideal if: you genuinely need a strong morning kick to get going. In that case, pick a coffee-forward blend (or our brewed Mushroom Coffee) rather than a low-caffeine alternative.

My honest take: for most people, a steadier 40 to 90mg beats a 150mg spike-and-crash. But if you're someone who lives on a double espresso, don't expect a 35mg alternative to do the same job. Match the caffeine to the moment.

Frequently asked questions

Does mushroom coffee have caffeine?

Usually yes, if it's a coffee blend, typically 35 to 90mg per cup. Pure "coffee alternatives" may have little or none. Check the label for a stated number.

Is mushroom coffee less caffeinated than regular coffee?

Generally yes. Most blends land below a standard ~95mg cup because they use less coffee per serving and mix in other ingredients.

Can I drink mushroom coffee at night?

A low-caffeine option (35 to 45mg) is friendlier in the evening than regular coffee, but caffeine sensitivity varies. If you're sensitive, keep even that to earlier in the day.

Why does mushroom coffee feel less jittery?

Lower total caffeine plus added L-theanine in many blends tends to smooth out the spike, so the lift feels steadier.
