You'll Need

  • Blender
  • Tall glass

Ingredients

  • ✓2 scoops Hazelnut Protein Coffee (one 40g serving)
  • ✓1 cup 2% milk
  • ✓1 medium banana, frozen in chunks
  • ✓1 tbsp hazelnut butter
  • ✓1/2 cup ice
  • ✓Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. 1Milk into the blender first, then the two scoops of Hazelnut Protein Coffee. Liquid before powder, always - powder on the bottom cakes against the blade housing and never fully clears.
  2. 2Pulse for 10 seconds to dissolve the powder into the milk before anything frozen goes in.
  3. 3Add the frozen banana chunks, the hazelnut butter, the ice and the pinch of salt.
  4. 4Blend on high for 40 seconds. Stop, scrape the sides down once, and blend another 10 seconds. That scrape is what gets rid of the last streak of unblended banana.
  5. 5Pour and drink within a few minutes, while it is still thick.

This is the one I make after training. It is 500 calories and 33g of protein, which is a meal rather than a drink, and it takes about four minutes including washing the blender.

Everything sweet in it is fruit. Hazelnut Protein Coffee has no sweeteners at all - 0g of sugar on the panel - so the 26g of sugar here is banana and milk, with nothing added. That is a genuinely different thing from a store-bought protein shake carrying the same number.

The frozen banana is not optional if you want it thick. A room-temperature banana gives you a thin brown drink; a frozen one gives you something you eat with a spoon.

Calculated from one 40g serving of Hazelnut Protein Coffee (175 cal, 22g protein, 0g sugar, 100mg sodium), 1 cup 2% milk, one medium banana and 1 tablespoon hazelnut butter. All 26g of sugar occurs naturally - roughly 14g from the banana and 12g of lactose from the milk. There is no added sugar of any kind, and the powder contains no sweeteners.

Why This Works

Freezing the banana is doing two separate jobs. It thickens the shake the way ice cream would, and it also concentrates the banana's own sweetness, which is what lets this work with no added sugar at all. A fresh banana plus ice gives you the same calories and a much thinner, less sweet drink.

Hazelnut butter and hazelnut flavouring reinforce each other rather than competing. The powder's hazelnut note sits in the aroma; the nut butter brings the fat and the roasted depth that aroma alone cannot. One tablespoon is enough - two makes it heavy and pushes it past 600 calories.

The pinch of salt matters in any shake containing nut butter. It sharpens the roasted flavour and cuts the flatness that milk-and-banana drinks otherwise fall into.

Tips From Our Kitchen

  • Keep a bag of peeled banana chunks in the freezer. This is the single habit that makes shakes a two-minute job.
  • Milk first, powder second, frozen things last.
  • Scrape the blender sides down once mid-blend. Every blender leaves a streak up there.
  • If your blender is struggling, add 2 tbsp more milk rather than blending longer - long blending warms the shake and thins it.
  • For a proper spoonable version, drop the ice and use two frozen bananas.

Swaps & Variations

  • Nut-free: 1 tbsp sunflower seed butter. Different flavour, same body.
  • Dairy-free: oat milk. Almond makes this noticeably thinner.
  • Lower sugar: half a banana plus 1/4 avocado. Drops the sugar to about 14g and keeps it thick.
  • Higher protein: add 1/2 cup Greek yogurt for another 10g.
  • Chocolate hazelnut: 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa.

Common Questions

How much protein is in this hazelnut shake?

33g - 22 from the powder, 8 from a cup of 2% milk and the rest from the banana and hazelnut butter.

Is the 26g of sugar added sugar?

No, none of it. It is banana sugar and lactose from the milk. Hazelnut Protein Coffee contains no sweeteners at all and reads 0g of sugar on its panel.

Why is my shake thin?

The banana was not frozen. A fresh banana plus ice gives you a watery drink; frozen banana is what makes it thick.

Can I make it the night before?

It separates. Better to freeze the banana, milk and powder together in a jar and blend in the morning.

Is this a meal replacement?

At 500 calories and 33g of protein it works as one after training. It is a substantial shake rather than a light drink.
