Hot Protein Matcha Latte
Frothy ceremonial matcha, warm, with 30g of protein and a steadier lift than coffee.

You'll Need
- Wide mug
- Small saucepan or milk frother
- Spoon or whisk
Ingredients
- ✓2 scoops High Protein Matcha (one 30g serving)
- ✓1 cup milk of choice (2% dairy, oat or almond)
- ✓2 tbsp warm water (not boiling)
- ✓1 tsp honey (optional)
Instructions
- 1Stir both scoops into the 2 tbsp of warm water until you have a smooth green paste.
- 2Warm the milk until it steams, then take it off the heat and froth it if you can.
- 3Pour the milk over the paste, stir, and add honey if you want it.
Matcha punishes boiling water - it turns bitter and astringent and stays that way. Warm water keeps it sweet and grassy, which is what you paid for when you bought ceremonial grade. Do that, add steamed milk, and you get a cafe matcha latte carrying 30g of protein.

Why This Works
Temperature is the entire recipe. Matcha's catechins turn harsh above roughly 175F, which is why a matcha made with boiling water tastes like it's punishing you. Warm water - hot from the tap, or boiled and left to sit two minutes - keeps the sweetness and the vegetal note that ceremonial grade is prized for.
The same ceiling protects the whey. Steam the milk, don't boil it, and pour it onto the paste rather than the other way round. Nothing seizes, nothing goes bitter.
Tips From Our Kitchen
- If you boiled the kettle, let it sit two minutes before you pour. That's roughly the drop you need.
- Froth the milk and spoon the foam on last. Matcha foam holds its shape better than coffee foam and looks the part.
- Taste before adding honey. Warm matcha reads sweeter than iced, and most people skip it.
- A wide mug over a tall one - you get more foam surface, which is most of the pleasure here.
Swaps & Variations
- Matcha oat latte: full-fat oat milk. Naturally sweet, so you almost certainly won't need honey.
- Vanilla matcha: a quarter teaspoon of vanilla extract rounds off the grassy edge.
- Spiced matcha: a pinch of cinnamon and a crack of black pepper. Sounds odd, works.
- Coconut matcha: canned coconut milk for a thicker, dessert-leaning version.
Common Questions
What temperature should the water be for matcha?
Around 175F - hot but well under boiling. If you've just boiled a kettle, let it stand two minutes. Boiling water is what makes matcha taste bitter, and it also risks clumping the whey.
Do I need to sift the matcha?
No. The matcha is already blended into the powder, and making a paste with two tablespoons of water first takes care of any lumps.
How much protein and how many calories?
30g of protein. 255 calories with honey and 2% milk, 234 without the honey, and 152 with unsweetened almond milk and no honey.
How much caffeine is in a hot matcha latte?
About 40mg, roughly half a standard cup of coffee. Many people describe matcha's energy as steadier than coffee's, though that varies.
Is it sweetened?
The powder has no sweeteners at all, natural or artificial, and 0g of sugar. The honey is optional and adds 6g if you use it.
