You'll Need

  • Tall glass
  • Spoon or small whisk

Ingredients

  • ✓2 scoops Hazelnut Protein Coffee (one 40g serving)
  • ✓1/2 cup cold water
  • ✓1/2 cup 2% milk
  • ✓1 cup ice cubes
  • ✓1/4 tsp cinnamon, optional

Instructions

  1. 1Put both scoops in the glass with two tablespoons of the cold water. Stir it into a smooth paste against the side of the glass first - fifteen seconds of this prevents every lump you would otherwise be chasing.
  2. 2Add the remaining water and stir for another 15 seconds until fully dissolved and slightly foamy.
  3. 3Fill the glass with ice, then pour the milk over the top so it layers and swirls down.
  4. 4Dust with cinnamon if using, and stir once before drinking.

A hazelnut iced latte from a coffee shop is usually two or three pumps of flavoured syrup, which is where most of its 40-odd grams of sugar come from. Hazelnut Protein Coffee has the hazelnut built into the powder and no sweeteners at all - the panel reads 0g of sugar - so the only sugar in this glass is the lactose from the milk.

Three minutes, one glass, no blender. The paste step at the start is what separates this from a gritty drink, and it takes about fifteen seconds.

This is also one of the two flavours built on four mushrooms rather than two - Lion's Mane, Wild Chaga, Maitake and Reishi, all fruiting body extract.

Calculated from one 40g serving of Hazelnut Protein Coffee (175 cal, 22g protein, 10g carbs, 5g fat, 0g sugar, 100mg sodium) plus 1/2 cup of 2% milk. All 6g of sugar is lactose occurring naturally in the milk - the powder contains no added sweeteners of any kind. Water and ice contribute nothing.

Why This Works

Dissolving the powder in water before the milk goes in matters more than it sounds. Milk proteins and whey compete for the same water, so powder dropped straight into cold milk hydrates unevenly and leaves grit. Water first gives the whey clean access, and the milk then just dilutes an already-smooth base.

Hazelnut is a fat-soluble flavour. It reads much stronger against dairy fat than against water, which is why half a cup of 2% milk lifts the hazelnut noticeably more than the same volume of extra water would. If you want it more pronounced still, use whole milk.

A coffee shop hazelnut latte gets its flavour from syrup and carries around 30 to 40g of sugar. This has 6g, all of it lactose from the milk, because there are no sweeteners in the powder at all.

Tips From Our Kitchen

  • Freeze some of the made-up drink into ice cubes and use those. Nothing waters down as it melts.
  • A shaker bottle skips the paste step entirely - 15 seconds of shaking does the same job.
  • Cold water dissolves this as well as room temperature and costs you less ice.
  • The cinnamon is worth trying at least once. It pushes the hazelnut forward without adding anything sweet.
  • Whole milk instead of 2% adds about 30 calories and makes the hazelnut noticeably rounder.

Swaps & Variations

  • Dairy-free: oat milk holds up best here - almond is too thin to carry hazelnut.
  • Stronger coffee: swap the water for chilled brewed coffee.
  • Sweet version: 1 tsp of maple. The powder is completely unsweetened, so this is entirely your call.
  • Blended: throw the lot in a blender with the ice for a frappé-style version.
  • Hazelnut mocha: add 1 tbsp of unsweetened cocoa to the paste stage.

Common Questions

How much sugar is in this hazelnut iced latte?

6g, all of it lactose from the milk. Hazelnut Protein Coffee contains no sweeteners at all and its panel reads 0g of sugar. A coffee shop hazelnut latte typically carries 30 to 40g because the flavour comes from syrup.

Do I need hazelnut syrup?

No. The hazelnut flavour is in the powder itself, which is the whole point of it.

Which mushrooms are in Hazelnut Protein Coffee?

Four - Lion's Mane, Wild Chaga, Maitake and Reishi - as fruiting body extract standardised to no less than 30% beta-glucans, alongside 100% grass-fed whey protein and arabica instant coffee.

How much caffeine does it have?

It is a low-caffeine blend, roughly half a standard cup of coffee per 40g serving.

Why is my latte gritty?

The powder went into milk rather than water. Make a paste with two tablespoons of water first, then build the drink from there.
