Iced Protein Matcha Latte
Ceremonial-grade matcha over ice with 28g of protein. No whisk, no sugar, no clumps.

You'll Need
- Tall 16 oz glass
- Spoon
- Second glass or small cup for the paste
Ingredients
- ✓2 scoops High Protein Matcha (one 30g serving)
- ✓3/4 cup milk of choice (2% dairy, oat or almond)
- ✓1/4 cup cold water
- ✓1 cup ice cubes
Instructions
- 1Stir both scoops into the 1/4 cup of cold water until you have a smooth, deep green paste.
- 2Fill a glass with ice and pour the milk over it.
- 3Pour the matcha slowly over the milk so it settles in a layer, then stir before drinking.
Traditional matcha is a project - sift the powder, heat water to exactly the right temperature, whisk in a W until your wrist gives out. This skips all of it, because the ceremonial-grade matcha is already blended with the whey and dissolves cold. What you get is the layered green latte, in about the time it takes to fill a glass with ice.

Why This Works
Matcha clumps for the same reason cocoa does - the particles are fine and they resist water. Traditionally you fix that by sifting and whisking. Here you fix it by starting with a quarter cup instead of a full glass: less liquid means the paste stays thick enough to work the lumps out against the side of the cup with a spoon.
Cold water also protects the matcha. Boiling water scalds it and pulls out the bitter, astringent edge that makes people think they don't like matcha. Cold keeps it sweet and grassy, which is the point of paying for ceremonial grade.
Tips From Our Kitchen
- Pour the matcha last, slowly, over the back of a spoon. That's how you get the two-tone look that makes it worth photographing.
- Oat milk is the classic pairing - it's slightly sweet on its own and softens matcha's grassiness.
- If any lumps survive, they'll be in the paste. Fix them there, not after the milk goes in.
- Half a serving is one scoop and 11g of protein, if you want it lighter.
Swaps & Variations
- Iced vanilla matcha: a quarter teaspoon of vanilla extract in the paste.
- Coconut matcha: canned coconut milk instead of dairy. Rich, and it makes the green pop.
- Strawberry matcha: muddle two strawberries in the bottom of the glass before the ice.
- If you want it sweet: a teaspoon of honey dissolved into the paste. Nothing in the powder is sweetened.
Common Questions
Do I need a bamboo whisk?
No. The matcha is already blended into the powder and dissolves cold with a spoon, as long as you make the paste first. A whisk gives a little more foam if you have one.
What grade of matcha is in it?
Ceremonial grade - the top tier, stone-ground from young leaves. It's what gives the drink its sweeter, less bitter flavour compared with culinary-grade matcha.
How much caffeine is in a protein matcha latte?
About 40mg, roughly half a standard cup of coffee. Many people find matcha's lift feels steadier than coffee's, though that varies person to person.
How much protein and how many calories?
28g of protein and 204 calories with 2% milk. With unsweetened almond milk it's 23g and 142 calories. The powder alone is 22g of protein for 112 calories.
Is it sweetened?
No sweeteners of any kind, natural or artificial, and no added sugar. Any sugar in the finished drink is lactose from the milk.
