  1. 1Almond milk and spinach into the blender first. Blend 20 seconds on their own until there are no leaf fragments left.

Most green smoothies are a banana-and-mango sugar bomb wearing a spinach costume. This one uses half a banana and a quarter of an avocado, which is why it comes in at 7g of sugar and 292 calories while still carrying 26g of protein. The ceremonial matcha is doing the flavour work, so the spinach genuinely disappears.

Why This Works

Blending the spinach with the liquid on its own first is the step that decides whether this tastes green or tastes like leaves. Spinach cell walls need shearing against liquid to break down; thrown in with ice and frozen fruit they just get chopped, and you're left with visible flecks and a grassy edge. Twenty seconds alone fixes it entirely.

Avocado replaces the second banana most recipes reach for. You get the same creamy body from fat instead of from sugar, which is the whole reason this lands at 7g of sugar rather than 25. A quarter is enough - half makes it heavy and starts to taste of avocado.

Tips From Our Kitchen

  • Freeze avocado quarters in a bag. They blend better frozen and you stop wasting the other three quarters.
  • Baby spinach, not mature. Mature leaves have tougher stems and a much stronger flavour.
  • If the colour goes murky rather than bright green, you used too much spinach against the matcha. Pull it back to 3/4 cup.
  • A squeeze of lime lifts the whole thing and costs nothing.

Swaps & Variations

  • Tropical: 1/4 cup frozen mango instead of the banana. Sweeter, about 4g more sugar.
  • Kale version: works, but blend it 30 seconds with the liquid instead of 20.
  • Higher protein: 1/4 cup Greek yogurt takes it to 31g.
  • No avocado: 1 tbsp chia soaked in the almond milk for 5 minutes gives similar body.

Common Questions

Can you actually taste the spinach?

No, provided you blend it with the liquid on its own first. Matcha has a naturally vegetal note that the spinach hides behind, which is why this pairing works better than spinach in a chocolate smoothie.

How much sugar is in it?

7 grams, all of it fruit sugar from the half banana. There's no added sugar and no sweetener in the powder at all. Most green smoothies at a juice bar run 30 to 40 grams.

How much protein?

26 grams - 22g from one 30g serving of High Protein Matcha, plus small amounts from the almond milk, spinach and avocado.

Why is my smoothie brown instead of green?

Usually too much spinach relative to matcha, or a banana that was heavily browned before freezing. Bright green comes from the matcha, so keep the spinach to a cup.

Can I make it ahead?

It's best fresh - avocado oxidises and the colour dulls within a few hours. If you must, add a squeeze of lime and keep it sealed and full to the top.
