You'll Need

  • Blender
  • Tall glass

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops Mocha Protein Coffee (one 30g serving)
  • 1 frozen banana, broken into pieces
  • 2 tbsp natural peanut butter
  • 1 cup milk of choice (2% dairy, oat or almond)
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. 1Milk into the blender first, then the peanut butter, banana, protein coffee, ice and salt on top.
  2. 2Blend 45 seconds. Stop, scrape down once, blend another 15.
  3. 3Pour into a tall glass. If you want the streaked look, run a spoonful of peanut butter down the inside of the glass first.

This is the one for after a session, or for a morning where breakfast isn't happening. Chocolate, coffee and peanut butter is a combination that doesn't need help, and between the powder, the milk and 2 tbsp of peanut butter it lands at 39g of protein. Nothing in it is sweetened - the banana does that work.

From the Mocha panel (109 cal, 22g protein, 7.1g carbs, 5.2g fat, 65mg sodium, 0g sugar per 30g serving) plus a banana, 2 tbsp natural peanut butter and 1 cup 2% milk. With unsweetened almond milk: 444 calories, 32g protein. This is a meal, not a snack - the numbers are meant to be that size.

Why This Works

Peanut butter is doing three jobs. It emulsifies, which is why the shake stays thick instead of separating while you drink it. It adds 8g of protein on top of the whey. And the fat slows how fast the whole thing leaves your stomach, which is the actual reason a shake like this holds you for hours while a plain protein shake doesn't.

Use natural peanut butter - the kind where the oil separates and the label reads "peanuts, salt." The commercial kind has added sugar and palm oil, which would put 6 or 7 grams of added sugar into a recipe that otherwise has none.

Tips From Our Kitchen

  • The pinch of salt is what makes the peanut butter taste like peanut butter instead of like paste. Don't skip it.
  • Freeze the banana in chunks on a tray. A whole frozen banana will stall most blenders.
  • Too thick? Two tablespoons of milk at a time. It loosens fast.
  • Half a serving of powder gives you 28g of protein at about 420 calories if this is too much for a morning.

Swaps & Variations

  • Almond butter: milder, slightly higher in fat, works identically.
  • Extra chocolate: a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa. It goes noticeably darker.
  • Lower calorie: unsweetened almond milk and 1 tbsp of peanut butter - about 350 calories, 30g protein.
  • Nut-free: sunflower seed butter. Same texture, slightly earthier.

Common Questions

How much protein is in this shake?

39 grams - 22g from one 30g serving of Mocha Protein Coffee, about 8g from the milk, 8g from the peanut butter and roughly 1g from the banana. With unsweetened almond milk it's 32g.

Is it a meal replacement?

At 526 calories with 39g of protein and 5g of fibre, it works as one. If you want it as a snack instead, use half a serving of powder and one tablespoon of peanut butter.

Is there added sugar?

None. The powder has zero sweeteners and 0g of sugar, and natural peanut butter has none either. The 29g on the label is fruit sugar from the banana and lactose from the milk.

Can I make it the night before?

Blend it and keep it sealed in the fridge for up to 24 hours. It will separate - shake hard before drinking. It's better fresh, but it's perfectly good.

Does it have caffeine?

About 40mg from the arabica coffee in the powder, roughly half a standard cup.
