You'll Need

  • Blender
  • Tall glass
  • Ice cream scoop

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops Original Protein Coffee (one 40g serving)
  • 3/4 cup whole milk, cold
  • 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream (about 2 small scoops)
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. 1Pour the cold milk into the blender first, then add both scoops of Original Protein Coffee. Liquid before powder every time - it keeps the powder off the blade housing where it cakes.
  2. 2Blend on low for 10 seconds, just enough to dissolve the powder into the milk before anything solid goes in.
  3. 3Add the ice cream, the ice and the pinch of salt. Blend on high for 25 to 30 seconds until thick and even.
  4. 4Pour into a tall glass. It should be thick enough that a straw stands up on its own for a second or two. If it is thinner than that, blend in a few more ice cubes.

This is not a protein shake pretending to be a milkshake. It is an actual milkshake - ice cream, cold milk, blended thick enough to hold a straw upright - that carries 30g of protein because two scoops of Original Protein Coffee are doing work in the background.

Original is the plainest flavour we make, and that is exactly why it belongs here. There is no vanilla or mocha note fighting the ice cream. You taste coffee and cream, the way a diner milkshake tastes, with the protein invisible.

Half a cup of ice cream is all it takes. People instinctively reach for two big scoops and end up with something that is 600 calories and mostly sugar. One modest half cup gives you the texture and the flavour, and the powder carries the body from there.

Calculated from a 40g serving of Original Protein Coffee (175 cal, 22g protein, 0g sugar), 3/4 cup whole milk and 1/2 cup standard vanilla ice cream. The 14g of added sugar comes entirely from the ice cream - the powder contains no sweeteners of any kind. Swapping the ice cream for a frozen banana brings this to roughly 310 calories with 0g added sugar.

Why This Works

Ice cream brings three things a protein shake normally has to fake - fat, air and cold. The fat coats your tongue so the drink reads creamy instead of thin, the air whipped into commercial ice cream gives it lift, and the cold blunts any chalkiness the way it does in a real milkshake. Half a cup is enough to do all three.

The pinch of salt is not optional and it is not there to make the shake salty. Salt sharpens the perception of both coffee bitterness and dairy sweetness at the same time, which is why almost every serious ice cream base contains it. Leave it out and this tastes flat in a way that is hard to place.

Original Protein Coffee is unsweetened - the panel reads 0g of sugar - so every gram of sugar in this shake came from the milk and the ice cream. That is why the added sugar figure is 14g rather than the 30g or more you would find in a drive-through coffee shake.

Tips From Our Kitchen

  • Freeze your glass for ten minutes first. A cold glass buys you several minutes before it starts to separate.
  • Milk first, powder second, solids last. This one ordering habit prevents almost every blending problem.
  • If your blender struggles, let the ice cream sit out for two minutes. Rock-hard ice cream is what burns out motors, not ice.
  • Drink it within about five minutes. Like any milkshake, it starts to split as it warms.

Swaps & Variations

  • Lower calorie: swap the ice cream for a frozen banana. Drops it to about 310 calories and removes all the added sugar.
  • Dairy-free: oat milk plus a non-dairy vanilla ice cream. Oat blends thicker than almond here.
  • Malted: 1 tablespoon of malted milk powder turns this into an old-fashioned malt.
  • Mocha version: use Mocha Protein Coffee instead of Original and skip the ice cream chocolate debate entirely.

Common Questions

How much protein is in this coffee milkshake?

30g. Twenty-two of those come from the two scoops of Original Protein Coffee, with the rest from the whole milk and ice cream.

Can I make it without ice cream?

Yes. A frozen banana gives you similar thickness for about 310 calories and no added sugar, though it is a fruitier drink rather than a true milkshake.

Do I need to brew coffee for this?

No. Original Protein Coffee already contains real arabica instant coffee, so the coffee flavour comes from the powder. It is a low-caffeine blend, roughly half a standard cup per serving.

Why is my shake grainy?

The powder went in with the solids. Blend the milk and powder together for ten seconds on their own first, then add the ice cream and ice.

Which mushrooms are in Original Protein Coffee?

Four - Lion's Mane, Wild Chaga, Maitake and Reishi - as fruiting body extract standardised to no less than 30% beta-glucans, alongside 100% grass-fed whey protein and arabica instant coffee.
